Dry and Flakey Skin

Post by Dawn Philpott on Wed Apr 09, 2008 8:18 am

Hi All,

Ruby has been displaying symtoms of really dry, flakey skin, vet wondered whether she would be better on a hypo allergenic diet, so after some research, decided to swop her from Royal canin to Burns hypo - allergenic range. This also coincided with dog trainer wondering whether Rubys hyperactivity was due to too much protein in her diet, so whether she would benefit on a lower protein diet - which apparently, the Burns range is lower in protein.

Interested in any comments, thoughts, advice on treatments for dry skin, anyone had experience of using Burns, is it a good food to use?(as dry complete food goes)

Her skin does seem better on the Burns and she does seem to have calmed down a little (this may be coincidence) - anyone else had similar problems?

Warmly
Dawn Smile

Yes, I've been looking at Katies page on the Barf diet and looks really interesting, I've pm Katie for a bit more info. The health benefits look great!

I'll bear in mind the shampoo, although I have to admit, she has only had about three showers - smelly dog!!!

Dry and Flakey Skin

Post by Sarah Rogers (Doodledoos) on Wed Apr 09, 2008 7:03 pm

I am often told that a little girl in the family would be nice 'hint hint'. But I have to say my own breeding days are more behind me than ahead of me!! The childbearing clock was ticking a bit too long for me and I had my boys fairly late on in life. If only I'd married my man a bit earlier and settled down, then I might have had a bit more time. You see, I'm one of those lucky girls who married a dish much younger than me (6 years actually between us), happily we are satisfied with our two boys and I'm not sure I could go through all those baby days and nights again!!

Here they are, having a face painting moment.

Love to all
Sarah I love you

How adorable - they are fantastic faces!

Well i'm in the opposite position Sarah, my hubby is 10 1/2 years older than me, and he has put an end to any more baby plans in our family, with three girls and a puppy we really have enough on our plate, and like you, I don't think I could face going back to those sleepless nights again!

Dry and Flakey Skin

Post by Sarah Rogers (Doodledoos) on Thu Apr 10, 2008 4:06 pm

Hi Dawn - Love is a wonderful thing!! Age matters not. Yes, it's really the sleepless nights that you remember most - oh and of course the actual bit when they decide they want to 'come out'!! My first took 3 days to arrive and then he had the ventouse - my second was a bit quicker but got stuck so I had an epidural and he got the ventouse treatment as well! So all in all, we have definitely decided to stick to two! I don't think my hubby could go through with another delivery - never mind me!! He was traumatised by the first one so badly, he arranged to have the Flu for the second one and only turned up at the last minute to see him being born and then sloped off back home to bed!!!!

Adult Burns is likely to be better as the rocket fuel levels should be lower. (I also changed from RC to Burns back in my complete days and it did slow Scruff down a bit but then I went to BARF)

As for the dryness, it could be a reaction to something, but is more than likely a deficiency in the diet. Fish oils are the best way to combat this and also Starflower oil. You can get from Holland Barratt, and can sprinkle the contents onto food if your dog won't eat them whole. Depends on the size of your dog as to how many and what else they already have in their diet

Funnily enough changed Scooby to Burns two days ago. Seems a little calmer and my god doesn't he love it. I admit I have had half a bottle of wine this evening but am not sure how we have managed to get from flakey skin to birthing stories. However for the record, Thomas 16 hours ventouse, forceps and emergency episiotomy. Ben 1 hour 30 minutes from first contraction to snuggled in blanket. Never fully recovered from the Thomas though and spent 3 months of this year recovering from surgery to repair what the little bugger put me through. End result is I now have a bionic bladder and the pelvic floor of a 12 year old. Ooops little too much information there I think.

NEVER AGAIN

much love to you all

How are you finding the burns diet? how big a bag is it and how much does it cost, I did try a bag for One of my fussy Labs but she did not like it much, I think I paid just under £40
