Doodles and dead things!!

Post by Jennie Lloyd on Fri Jun 27, 2008 10:49 am

Hello all,

I just had to tell you about my day yesterday and wondered if you have had similar experiences...

Yesterday afternoon Maddie and I were stretching our legs in the garden when I saw her take a particular interest in something lying in the grass...I walked over to see what it was and low and behold I realised it was a small black dead frog No I quickly tried to call Mads away but of course that made her want it even more! She picked it up and was chomping at it so I walked (ok ran!) away in shock/disgust! Luckily she doesn't like to see me walk away and instantly dropped the frog and came inside. I lured her into her pen with some yummy liver cake but then I noticed she couldn't eat it and kept spitting it out. I looked again and her mouth and nose were running with saliva, it was dripping everywhere and she seemed to shrink into a little ball. I thought oh dear, vet here we come but she seemed to right herself pretty quickly and was normal again within 5-10 mins so I just kept my eye on her.

I then went back outside to find the frog which I saw was covered in black ants. Initially I thought perhaps Mr Croaky had released some kind of poison but I wonder if in fact the ants stung her mouth?

Anyway, later that day I took her to Windsor Great Park for a lovely long walk and again she stopped along the route and was very interested! pale I called her and eventually she came running to me with half a dead bird in her mouth and the wing pointing straight towards me affraid I managed to get her to drop it only to find her with the other half of it in her mouth about 20 paces forwards...

Also when she was about 4 months old she was in the garden and came running up to me with something hanging out of her mouth which I eventually found was a dead mouse! The tail was stiff and curling out round her whiskers and it makes me cold from head to toe! Am I a big wuss??

Do any of your Doodles like to great you with such 'presents'!!! I can only just about look her in the eye again now!!

Yuckily yours,

Jen xx

It's not just a doodle thing but yes Toby's always got something gross in his mouth. I was picking up his poo on a walk today and it looked odd- well odder than usual- and I realised it was the undigested remains of the horse poo he ate yesterday!!!!!!! Yuk!
Not as bad as dead frogs and mice though - and... affraid well done on winning the eating dead things competition!

Hah! Horse Pooh! I guess it's full of nutrients - could even make Toby grow!!
Lately I've been finding lots of half eaten bare gollies (you know, baby birds with no feathers). Poor little things fall out of their nests and then if that doesn't finish them off then a gigantic dog thing comes along and gobbles them up!
Yuck.

I found one of my cats sitting on our bed just dribbling once. I panicked thinking she had been poisoned and rushed her to the vet - he said she had probably been licking toads. This sounded like a strange perversion to me, but he said that toads give of something through their skin that is offensive to mammals as a defense mechanism, and the effect is excessive dribbling tongue

He's only half a doodle, but the most disgusting thing I have ever had to pull out of a dogs mouth was a rotton stinking seal pup from my lab Barney. He is so strong it took 2 of us to open his mouth, and a third to pull it out - it must have been halfway down his throat - truly gross. We were out for a picnic, but no amount of scrubbing our hands in the public loos could get the smell off them, so no-one really wanted to eat pale

Wow! We don't get many seal pups in Herefordshire thankfully - I'm guessing you must be near the coast Bid? The toad/frog thing sounds truely grotesque. I would really have panicked had I seen all the foaming...... Now we all know that it is a reaction - so there's another wonderful thing about this Forum - so many things to learn. Thanks for that.
I find it totally gross that dogs often eat their own poo. I gather that it's quite natural in doggy world to do this however, and that they are somehow getting nutrients through it...... mmmm nice!! Rolling Eyes
Another thing that is really quite horrid is eating the placentas from the birth - again they are getting lots of vital nutrients from such delicacies - but I say rather them than me!! It's natures way I guess......

Now that sucks!!! I can remember years ago my cat killing a mouse and it was in the days when I smoked. The cat left the bottom and tail in my ash tray which was on the floor. The guy I lived with at the time shouted out

"Honey, cats been smoking again and he is still smoking them down to the butt!"

Did I laugh

Wow That is gross, really yukky, what happened to the rest? Did she eat it? Her poos will be interesting in the morning, a bit of beak here, a claw there... cyclops

Ha! Loved the mouse and the ash tray one!
No sign of any claws or beaks in poos yet - I should think the dog that murdered this poor bird is so ashamed, if she has any sense she will open her bowels somewhere very very private.

Today, we (that s the royal we) have tried to eat a dead baby mouse and two dead baby birds, followed by a main course of horse poo - utterly charming. Been thwarted first time around earlier this evening, we tried again tonight. What's the betting in the morning? Question

What a truly disgusting topic, but very interesting. Its comforting to know my dogs are not the only ones going round clearing up the countryside of all dead animals. Ruby loves the horse poo aswell while Scruffy is content to eat her own poo - lovely!! Saves me clearing it up I suppose.
That is a totally disgusting photo Sarah, if we were having a 'grotesque competition' you'd win with that one!!!! Razz
